Ammonia dynamics in crystalline layered Carbon Nitride
Abstract: With the goal of achieving Net Zero, it is crucial to develop as many possible alternatives for green energy. The preferred option is using Hydrogen as energy carrier; however gaseous hydrogen storage requires HP vessels while liquid storage needs cryogenic tanks. An alternative is given by ammonia. On the negative side, ammonia has a narrow flammability range and its toxicity is a concern; it is, therefore, usually stored in metal salts and released reversibly. Layered carbon nitrides form a series of semiconducting materials with structures related to graphite. They are being intensively investigated for applications ranging from redox catalysis, fuel cell and electrolyzer devices, and CO2 sequestration. Recently we have proposed them as candidates for inclusion in membrane systems for energy and nanofiltration applications. We now intend to study their potential as ammonia carriers.
