SANS Analysis the Accessibility of Aqueous-Based Electrolytes into the Porous Structure of Supercapacitor Composite Electrodes

Abstract: As the key electrochemical energy storage devices in energy-storage/power supply systems, supercapacitors are capable of absorbing/delivering large amounts of energy over short timescales. To reduce their overall cost and improve their safety, we are developing an advanced range of aqueous electrolyte devices, as they are environmentally benign and can be manufactured in non-inert atmospheres. However, to compensate for reduced energy density we are developing a range of composite cobalt-loaded carbon electrode-materials capable of achieving high energy density at high charge?discharge rates. In a recently finished set of experiments using Contrast-Matched SANS on ZOOM, we conducted some initial experiments on these carbons and obtained very promising results on the electrolyte accessibility to their porosity because of the incorporation of cobalt into their structures. However, due to a time-consuming process of their preparation and logistical difficulties arising from Covid protocols we were not able to prepare a full range of carbons to finalize our measurements to fully understand the true accessibility of electrolyte into their porous structure. These carbons have now been prepared and characterized in terms of their pore size distribution and their capacitance measurements. It is now vital for us to urgently conduct SANS measurements on these samples in order to allow the on-time completion of PhD thesis by the student, as she is finishing her PhD studies soon.
