A candidate for a low-dimensional (or one-dimensional) f-electron Jahn-Teller system

Abstract: Researchers were always fascinated to understand the interaction between phonons and localized electrons (especially 4f-electrons) since it affects several phenomena in connection with the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect (CJTE) and the consequent structural transitions. The physics of such systems becomes even more interesting when we realize such complex magneto elastic coupling in 1-dimensional system eg., PrCl3. In heat capacity of PrCl3, a single sharp peak is observed at 0.4K which is possibly associated with a structural transition arising from the CJTE distortion originating from orbital degeneracy. Under external magnetic field, the heat capacity shows unique features, and it looks like the system has coupled magneto-elastic properties. Therefore, here we are proposing neutron diffraction studies in milli-kelvin range using dilution fridge on powder and single crystalline PrCl3.
