Applying neutron tomography to resolve the timing of life history events in Lavigeria snails (Gastropoda; Cerithioidea; Paludomidae)
Abstract: Neutron tomography (NT) provides opportunities to image in 3D biological specimens which are otherwise intractable to conventional computed tomography (CT) due to low density contrasts, such as soft tissues which may not be stained, or fossils with shell and matrix of similar composition. We will use NT to image modern and fossil specimens of the gastropod Lavigeria and apply mathematical methods to study shape change through growth and maturation, to establish a method for the detailed study of evolution and development in the highly speciose and ancient Class Gastropoda for the first time.
