Physico-chemical properties of xylans

Abstract: Pulp and paper industry has a decisive role in development of sustainable future. Their products are not only fibers but also polymeric wood extracts such as hemicelluloses or polysaccharides. Wood xylans are polysaccharides consisting of xylose monosaccharide backbone that contains glucuronic acid substitutes Although the molecules are hydrophilic, the high molecular weight grades that are needed for engineered materials can be solubilized in water only to a limited extent or not at all, which limits general application of wood xylans. We will study dispersibility of xylans from different suppliers and in-house sample. The dispersibility will be studied in two solvents, DMSO and water. The different xylans varies in molecular weight, sugar substitution and uronic acid content. With this knowledge we will predict dispersibility of different xylans in solvents such as DMSO and water.
