Probing the solid and liquid state structure of organic ionic plastic crystal formamidinium triflate

Abstract: This is a Disordered Materials XPress request for the NIMROD beamline. Organic ionic plastic crystals (OIPCs) are a family of solid-state materials with unique plastic mechanical properties that arise from the existence of crystalline states with various forms of disorder (rotational, translational, or both). They can be used as electrolytes and in barocaloric refrigeration. Critical to the design of new OIPCs is understanding of the structure-property relationships that underpin these dynamics; it is therefore critical to elucidate the structure of the plastic crystal phases of OIPCs. An organic salt/ionic liquid, formamidinium triflate, has recently been found to exist in a plastic crystalline state between -3 °C and 100 °C. The aim of the proposed neutron scattering experiments is to elucidate the structure and interactions in both the plastic crystalline and liquid phases.
