Investigation of exotic quasi-particle excitations in the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic trimer compound K2Cu3Ge4O12

Abstract: The quantum spin-1/2 trimer chains with repeated couplings J1-J1-J2 (intratrimer J1 and intertrimer J2) are of current interest due to emergent composite-excitations of novel quasi-particles doublons and quartons as well as unconventional properties arising from the strong quantum fluctuations and topology, such as, quantum phenomenon of magnetization plateau. The compounds A2Cu3Ge4O12 with A = Na and K are model spin-1/2 AFM trimer chain systems, and show quantum 1/3-magnetization plateau. Here we propose inelastic neutron scattering measurements on K2Cu3Ge4O12 using the LET spectrometer down to 1.5 K to investigate the novel quasi-particle excitations. The outcome of the proposed measurements is expected to provide an in-depth knowledge about the emergent composite-excitations of novel quasi-particles as predicted recently by theory for spin-1/2 trimer chains.
