Probing the magnetic structure of new magnetoelectric multiferroics RFeGe2O7 (R = La and Nd) by high-resolution neutron diffraction
Abstract: Multiferroic materials are widely studied because of their potential for technological applications as they exhibit a combination of two or more ferroic orders in a single phase. Along this line, we have discovered two new magnetoelectric multiferroic materials in the family of Germanates RFeGe2O7 (R=La and Nd). Both the compounds crystallize in a monoclinic structure (space group P121/c1). LaFeGe2O7 exhibits long-range magnetic ordering of Fe3+ ions at TN = 6.4 K and another transition at 3.8 K, indicating the presence of a transition between different types of magnetic structures. NdFeGe2O7 orders antiferromagnetically at 4 K. Both the compounds exhibit ferroelectricity at TN demonstrating the magnetoelectric multiferroicity. Therefore, we need knowledge of the magnetic structure to understand the origin of multiferroicity in RFeGe2O7 (R=La and Nd).
