Phase transformations in directional ice templated (DIT) battery electrodes studied by 4D Bragg edge imaging
Abstract: Within the context of high energy storage systems, we intend to investigate phase changes in Li-Ion battery electrodes during battery charging/discharging. 4D Bragg edge imaging (4DBEI) analyses Bragg edge shifts during lithium de-/intercalation in the electrodes. These measurements will enable the investigation of the chemical state of charge (SoC) spatially resolved over a Li-Ion battery cell and the study of electrode degradation processes that happen as a consequence of a wide range of conditions such as high charge/discharge rates, elevated temperatures, mechanical deformation and overcharging. Such degradation processes can lead to stress and strain in the battery electrodes and affect the cell performance, life time and can result in a serious loss of capacity. We will study novel directional ice templated (DIT) electrodes which are characterised by high capacity and power output.
