Co-free Li-rich compositions: New solid solutions for high-capacity cathodes

Abstract: Commercial Li-ion batteries are based on materials which are toxic and expensive. In order to make Li-ion batteries cheaper and greener for future mobility, elements such as cobalt need to be replaced and performance of batteries improved. In this proposal, we aim to characterize the crystal structure of new Co-free materials containing lithium and metallic atoms of similar atomic number (Ni, Mn) by neutron radiation, and stablish significant correlations between composition and performance as cathode for Li-ion batteries.
