Neutron Tomography of Weathered and Consolidated Sandstone
Abstract: This project is a collaboration between the University of Oxford and the Getty Conservation Institute in Los Angeles which seeks to understand a variety of material characteristics and conservation needs of sandstone as a heritage building material. A series of investigations are proposed to reconstruct, using Neutron Tomography, the internal pore network of samples of Locharbriggs Sandstone, concentrating on the distribution and concentration of two previously applied and weathered ethyl silicate consolidants. Variation between sample exposures and treatment will allow for identification of the mechanisms of change within the sample stone.
