Investigation into the Effect of Crystallographic Orientation on the Observed Kinetic Energy of the Atoms in Alkali Metal Iodides
Abstract: Neutron capture analysis allows for the measurement of the mean kinetic energy of the nucleus prior to capture. This technique can give insight into motion of atoms as well as providing additional information for structural simulations. In this proposal, we would like to investigate the effect of crystal orientation on the observed kinetic energy of the atoms by measuring the iodine gamma resonances when the incident neutron beam aligned with crystallographic directions of single crystals of sodium iodide and caesium iodide. These results will be compared to the measurements of powders of both iodides.
