Local structure in PMN-PT relaxor ferroelectrics
Abstract: The proposed experiments will provide neutron total-scattering data for elucidating the nanoscale ordering of polar atomic displacements that underlie the commercially viable piezoelectric properties in a classical oxide ferroelectric system. These materials find use in applications ranging from sonar transducers in naval radar systems to fuel injectors in diesel automobile engines. The currently missing detailed knowledge of atomic arrangements is required to facilitate the design of new formulations with the improved piezoelectric performance.
