Complex spin orders in Ni2-xCoxScSbO6

Abstract: Cation-ordered variants of the M2O3 corundum structure are of interest as polar magnets with potential multiferroic properties, e.g. Ni3TeO6 (NTO). Recently we reported that NTO-type solid solutions Ni2-xCoxScSbO6 have a very rich magnetic phase diagram. Ni2ScSbO6 has an incommensurate [0 ky 0] spin structure but investigated x = 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 compositions were found to have a novel series of long-period lock-in [0 0 kz] spin structures with commensurate kz = 1/3n. We propose here to explore the low-x crossover region between [0 ky 0] and [0 0 kz] regimes to discover whether other kz = 1/3n periodicities with n < 5, or other spin structures emerge close to the crossover. We also propose to study the high field NPD of the x = 0.1 sample to determine the spin order in the metamagnetic state observed above Hc ~2T at 4 K. 4 days of WISH beamtime are requested.
