Bronze Age Metalwork at the British Museum
Abstract: The British Museum holds a wide collection of prehistoric utensils spanning hundreds of years, 1000 - 600 BC, corresponding to the transition between the Late Bronze Age and the Iron Age. The research team proposes to investigate 10 palstaves using simultaneous neutron diffraction (ND), neutron resonance capture analysis (NRCA) and time-resolved prompt gamma activation analysis (T-PGAA) to study the microstructure, manufacturing techniques, corrosion products and the elemental/isotopic composition of the objects. The measurements will carried out at the INES beamline and are part of a wider range of measurements to undertake at the ISIS spallation neutron source and the British Museum. This is one of the three proposals we are submitting on the same set of samples to unveil different aspects of our samples. X-ray based techniques are also programmed at the British Museum.
