SANS investigation of cross-linking in irradiated greases

Abstract: Greases used in harsh radioactive environments are showing microstructural damages. These defects cause changes in the physical and chemical properties of materials, which in turn can lead to premature structural failure. The physical properties of polymers depend on the arrangement of individual units and only small changes i.e. through radiation are needed to convert a 1D or 2D polymer into a 3D polymeric network. For example, saturated hydrocarbons show an increased degree of unsaturation and cross-linking upon irradiation, consistent with the loss of hydrogen observed under irradiation. A second consequence of irradiation is degradation with reduction in molecular weight. We would like to compare an irradiated grease to a virgin grease using small-ange neutron scattering. Rheology in-situ with SANS will help us discover modifications in the cross-linking in the grease.
