Na-ion diffusion mechanism in NaxFe1/2Mn1/2O2 using polarised neutrons

Abstract: NaxFe1/2Mn1/2O2 has been identified as a potential cathode material for Na-ion batteries since it has comparable electrochemical performance to commercially available Li-ion cathodes and it is composed entirely of abundant elements. For x = 2/3 it has the P2-NaxCoO2 structure. The suppression of sodium ordering is expected to change the diffusion mechanism, and improve electrochemical performance. We have measured QENS from NaxFe1/2Mn1/2O2 using unpolarised neutrons on LET, but the presence of quasi-elastic magnetic and coherent scattering makes it difficult to extract a reliable Q-dependence for comparison with the Chudley-Elliott model. Here we propose to use uniaxial polarisation analysis with out-of-plane scattering in order to isolate the spin-incoherent scattering.
