Crystal field effects of Pr in antiferromagnetic PrFe2Al8
Abstract: The intermetallic compound PrFe2Al8 consists of network of Al which forms quasi cage-like structure where the Pr and the Fe form chains of atoms along the c-axis. In this structure, Pr3+ ion is situated at the 4g Wyckoff position of the Pbam space group which allows it to have 9 singlet levels (J = 4) and consequently, crystal field effects. A Schottky-like anomaly centered at 100 K was deduced from the analysis of specific heat of PrFe2Al8. The magnetic entropy estimated at 4 K, where PrFe2Al8 presents a sharp magnetic transition owing to Pr-ordering, is equal to R ln(2) suggesting a Pr doublet. We propose to perform time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering experiments on powder samples of PrFe2Al8 at the instrument MARI in order to estimate the crystal field levels of J = 4 Pr3+ ion in PrFe2Al8.
