Light induced spin polarisation in Ruby
Abstract: To date, most experiments within the MuSES project have been on liquids samples at room temperature. The liquids were required to overlap the optical absorption with the muon¿s stopping profile, as the materials being investigated are strongly absorbing. This proposal is to study the photoexcited state of magneto-optically active solids with muons, notably ruby, with the intention to a) better understand the magneto-optical properties and dynamics of this material class and b) demonstrate the applicability of laser-MuSR for these kind of investigations. The major goal is to measure the magnetic state induced by circularly polarised light. Significantly if the ordering is observed, this will be the first time that photo-induced coherent electron spin relaxation has been measured in the bulk of the sample with MuSR. This would open the door to a plethora of photomagnetic possibilities.
