Proving the succesful synthesis of the chemically-ordered L10 FeNi phase
Abstract: The tetragonal chemically-ordered L10 FeNi phase has great potential for advanced permanent magnet applications due to its compelling magnetic properties, low cost and availability of its constituent elements. While L10 FeNi is found in meteorites, bulk synthesis has not been achieved due to its low order-disorder temperature of 320°C, below which phase formation is kinetically limited. In this research we explore pathways to synthesize L10 FeNi in earthly timeframes. Preliminary neutron testing of our samples has provided initial evidence of successful formation of a tetragonal FeNi phase, but chemical ordering has not been detected. Additional beam time at HRPD is requested to test samples fabricated with the stable isotope 62Ni, calculated to amplify the difference in scattering factors of Fe and Ni, enhancing the intensity of the superlattice peaks arising from chemical ordering.
