Inelastic neutron scattering study on quaternary borocarbides PrPt2B2C and PrPd2B2C

Abstract: The borocarbides PrPt2B2C and PrPd2B2C forming in the tetragonal structure do not show any long range magnetic order down to 0.5 K. PrPt2B2C shows a superconducting transition at Tc =6 K whereas PrPd2B2C behaves like a Van?Vleck paramagnet. The heat capacity data of both show broad Schottky type anomaly due to the presence of crystal electric field (CEF). An analysis of heat capacity data reveals a possible CEF split singlet ground state in these compounds. The CEF wave functions play an important role in governing the magnetic and superconducting properties, therefore it would be of interest to investigate the CEF excitations in these compounds using inelastic neutron scattering technique for a better insight to the magnetic/superconducting ground state and absence of magnetic ordering in these compounds. We therefore propose to carry out INS study on these compounds using MARI.
