Encapsulation of Hydrophobic Species in Surfactant Micelles

Abstract: Our recent work demonstrates that the details of water structure around micelles are now accessible using Empirical Potential Structure Refinement methods combined with neutron scattering data. NIMROD is ideal to study large micelles simultaneously with the local structures within & around them. Here we wish to probe the interior of the micelles to determine the location of encapsulated hydrophobic species. Encapsulation of oily species within a hydrophobic environment, while being surrounded by water, is the basis of many applications of surfactants. Highly hydrophobic species are assumed to sit deep within the core of the micelle however species with a hydrophilic or polarisable group, such as a double bond, may sit closer to the polar surface. We propose to study encapsulation of species with different degrees of hydrophobicity within cationic micelles to investigate their location.
