Competitive and synergistic interactions in gel formation
Abstract: The interactions of small molecules with Pluronic copolymers are of relevance to their numerous pharmaceutical, domestic, technological and industrial applications. Whereas the effect of alcohols on the gel has been widely studied, there are far fewer studies concerning polymer gel-surfactant systems in polar solvents other than water. In this proposal, we wish to continue our study into the effects of short, medium and long chained alcohols, ionic/non-ionic surfactants comprising dodecyl chain and different head group sizes on the gel structure of one specific Pluronic, P123. Of interest is how the structure of the gel is perturbed by the alcohol, information that may not be gained from any other technique.
