Investigation of the micellar aggregates in low molecular weight gelators

Abstract: We have been investigating dipeptide-based low molecular weight gelators. Here, on lowering the pH from 12 to 4, a self-supporting gel is formed. Gels are formed by the sel-assembly of the gelators into one dimensional fibres. We have shown that mixtures of two gelators can form self-sorted fibres (where the two components do not mix) or mixed fibres. At high pH pre-gelation, the gelators form micellar aggregates. It is not clear whether mixtures form a single mixed micellar structure, or self-sorted micelles. Our hypothesis is that the micellar structure determines the fibre phase. Here, we will test this hypothesis. The results will allow us to more rationally design multi-component structures, which will enable architectures suitable for a range of exciting applications.
