Residual Stress Measurement in Fibre Laser Beam Welded Aluminium Plates

Abstract: Fibre Laser Beam Welding (FLBW) is a relatively new technology that has many advantages over other welding techniques. An understanding of the residual stress and microstructural effects of FLBW in Aluminium alloy 2024 is required before it can be implemented in industrial applications, e.g. aircraft fuselage structures. FLBW Al2024 is highly beneficial and increases manufacturing efficiencies. The aim of this proposal is to measure the residual stress distribution in a butt welded and fillet welded stiffened plate of Al2024. The measurements will be used to develop and validate finite element models. The work is required to complete a PhD project studying the influence of weld process parameters on the properties of FLBW structures of Al 2024.
