Local Structure in Ni-Cr Solid Solutions

Abstract: The future of aviation relies on the improvement of the efficiency of the jet-turbine engines, which is in turn reliant on the properties of the materials (specifically the metal alloys) from which they are made. In order to improve the design of alloys suitable for the extreme conditions encountered in a jet turbine engine, a greater understanding of the factors that influence alloy properties is required. We are proposing to perform a fundamental study of the binary metal alloy Nickel Chromium. Chromium is often incorporated into metal alloys due to its high environmental resistance and strengthening properties. By analysing the local ordering on the atomic scale within this alloy, as we vary the temperature and composition, we believe we can gain valuable insight into the processes and mechanisms that effect the strength of such alloys, and so help guide future alloy design.
