Elucidating the magnetic nature of alpha-RuCl3 - a rediscovered honeycomb system
Abstract: Materials with layered honeycomb structures have been subject to a strenuous research effort in the past couple of years in an effort to find materials that exemplify the exactly soluble Kitaev model, with its spin liquid ground state. alpha-RuCl3 has many of the properties needed by the Kitaev model but, like most other candidate materials, shows magnetic order. Many interesting ordered states have been found in the other candidate materials but, despite decades of study, the nature of the magnetic ordering of alpha-RuCl3 is yet to be resolved. Using a two-pronged assault of muon spin relaxation and resonant x-ray scattering we aim to determine the nature of the magnetic ground state.
