A Single Crystal study of the Helical and Skyrmion Textures in a Chiral Magnetic system.

Abstract: Cu2OSeO3 belongs to a family of magnetic crystals that displays unique properties of a whirlpool like vortex of magnetic moments (skyrmions) in a small range of temperature and applied magnetic field. Skyrmions are particle-like nanometer sized spin textures observed only in chiral magnetic systems. These have promising uses in the development of new low-powered computing devices. The understanding of the formation of these vortices is important in the development of room temperature operational devices. This system also displays interesting helical and conical magnetic structures which along with the skyrmions form a stable lattice that can be observed by neutron diffraction. We aim to measure for the first time the properties of the system with a technique that allows us to study the crystallographic and magnetic structure as a function of both temperature and applied magnetic field.
