Investigation of Au/C catalysts for the acetylene hydrochlorination reaction by inelastic neutron scattering spectroscopy
Abstract: The hydrochorination of acetylene is an important industrial reaction in the manufacturing of polyvinyl chloride. The current mercuric chloride catalyst is currently being replaced with a more environmentally friendly gold supported on carbon catalyst. We wish to investigate the surface functional groups of gold supported on acid treated carbon. This material can be a highly active catalyst in the acetylene hydrochorination reaction, depending on the acid treatment of the carbon support. A key objective would be to measure the inelastic neutron spectra of carbons with different acid treatments and correlating the observed surface species with the known activity of these catalysts. This would help us rationally design better catalysts in the future. Also we wish to record the spectrum of acetylene bound to the gold on carbon catalysts in order to help understand the reaction mechanism.
