Antiferromagnetic domain manipulation in hematite thin films studied by neutron diffraction

Abstract: We propose to study the antiferromagnetic (AFM) domain structure of 100 nm thick Fe2O3 thin films using WISH. The sample will be magnetically poled to prepare an imbalance in the AFM domain population. By measuring a series of structurally extinct magnetic reflections we are sensitive to the planar orientation of the spins; which allows us to measure the relative populations of the AFM domains. This investigation will develop the understanding of antiferromagnetic domain manipulation of thin films, where this information is essential in development of prototype devices, such as in spin valves. WISH's large detector bank, high Q resolution and excellent collimation make it a unique instrument worldwide for this study. Our results will allow us to refine our film growth programme in the development of spintroics based on antiferromagnetic materials.
