Texture measurement and in-situ annealing of hot-rolled α + β dual-phase ZrNb alloys

Abstract: The experiment will use neutron diffraction to analyse a hot-rolled matrix of dual-phase ZrNb alloys, in order to measure the macroscopic texture dependence on temperature, strain and second phase fraction. In-situ heating will be used to determine the texture changes associated with annealing. This will help us to better understand the underlying mechanisms, which form a strong transverse (TD) texture component of the 0002 basal pole in these materials - that cannot currently be predicted. Only GEM provides a high-temperature furnace and the macrotexture measurement of large volumes of material within a matter of minutes and without sample reorientation to do this. Results will develop the predictive capabilities of microstructure evolution models, directly informing the processing and product development for next generation reactor core structural components at Rolls-Royce.
