Charge and magnetic order in an overdoped manganite

Abstract: Perovskite manganites exhibit a plethora of competing phases that can be tuned with modest changes in external parameters such as temperature, magnetic field, pressure or chemical doping. The degenerate double exchange theory, with suitable choice of renormalised parameters, can explain the characteristics of these phases and where they appear in the phase diagram. Recent work on half-doped manganites has shown excellent agreement between this theory and experiments. We now plan to extend this comparison to the overdoped regime, which is comparatively poorly understood due to the difficulties of sample synthesis. BiMnO3 can be doped with Sr to give access to an unusually wide range of hole-doping, so we have chosen this system on which to focus crystal growth efforts. We seek to characterise the nature of the charge and magnetic order present in our single crystal samples
