Magnetic order in polar oxides: Mn2FeWO6 and Mn2MnWO6
Abstract: Magnetoelectric materials, combining properties associated with magnetic and ferroelectric memory applications (e.g. in hard drives) are difficult to prepare but would represent a huge step forward in memory devices. Recently, theoretical work has highlighted several new classes of materials that might display such properties. One such family is derived from the corundum (Al2O3) structure but with various combinations of cations (including those with magnetic moments) instead of Al3+ cations. We propose to use neutron powder diffraction to investigate the structural chemistry and magnetic behaviour of two such materials. This understanding will be invaluable to guide future experimental and theoretical work to develop new materials with optimised properties.
