Melting the long-range magnetic order in SrEr2O4 with an applied magnetic field
Abstract: We have observed an interesting phenomenon of the destruction of long-range magnetic order in SrEr2O4 by a relatively modest applied magnetic field. For a field applied along the [001] direction (parallel to the magnetic moments on one of the Er3+ sites) a field of 0.2 - 0.4 tesla is sufficient to replace well-defined sharp Bragg peaks with the diffuse scattering features corresponding to a much shorter magnetic correlation length. At higher fields the long-range order is restored, but it is different from the zero-field state. The aim of this proposal is to investigate the unusual field-induced transition and clarify the nature of the high-field magnetic order.
