Pressure effect on field-induced phase transitions in multiferroic CuFeO2 investigated by neutron diffraction under high-pressure

Abstract: We propose to perform neutron diffraction experiments under high-pressure and high-magnetic-filed on multiferroic CuFeO2 using WISH in combination with hybrid-anvil-cell (up to 10 GPa). The ferroelectric polarization in CuFeO2 is induced magnetic field, impurity doping, and hydrostatic pressure, which are concomitant with incommensurate proper screw spin ordering. Our recent high pressure experiment in zero field on WISH demonstrated drastic change in magnetic ground state from non-polar to polar in CuFeO2. (PRB 89, 220403(R) (2014)) In order to understand the drastic change in magnetic ordering determined by exchange and anisotropy parameters, it is necessary to know how magnetic field-induced phase transitions are modified by pressure. In this study, we investigate pressure effect on the field-induced phase transitions by neutron diffraction under pressure and magnetic field in CuFeO2.
