Investigation of spin-Hamiltonian of the quasi-1D trimer spin-chain compound CaNi3P4O14
Abstract: Among the spin-trimer compounds AM3(P2O7)2 (where A=Ca, Sr, Ba, Pb and M=Co, Mn, Ni), only the Mn based compounds (with S=5/2) exhibit the 1/3 magnetization plateau, whereas, no such magnetization plateau is found for the isostructural Co (S=3/2) and Ni (S=1) based compounds having low spin values. We propose an inelastic neutron scattering study on the quasi-1D trimer spin-chain compound CaNi3P4O14 to understand the physics behind the absence of 1/3 magnetization plateau and to determining the spin Hamiltonian (the exchange constants and anisotropies) in this spin trimer system. Crystal field excitation spectra will be also measured to understand the origin of the single-ion-anisotropy and orbital moment in the compound.
