Towards reliable residual stress characterization in dissimilar metal welds
Abstract: The proposed experiment is a continuation of the initial studies carried out on SALSA instrument (ILL, Grenoble) as part of the collaborative PhD project jointly funded by the Open University (UK) and ILL. The first proposal formed the foundations for investigating methods of improving the characterization of residual stress in dissimilar metal welds. This proposed experiment is intended to continue the process of developing a methodology for quantifying and correcting for the errors specific to determining residual stress in dissimilar metal welds, specifically the issue of pseudo strains when the gauge volume traverses an internal boundary. The findings will support the planned inclusion of a best practice guide for neutron diffraction measurements on DMWs in the UK nuclear industry, R6 structural integrity code.
