Interfacial Adsorption of Soluble Amino-Acid Based Surfactants in Mixtures with SDS and C12E6
Abstract: Amino acid based surfactants have been known for many years, but so far few detailed studies have been carried out on their properties. We are using amino acids extracted from grain residues, otherwise used in animal feed, to prepare surfactants with amino-acid based headgroups. We aim to evaluate whether such feedstocks could provide a renewable source for such amphiphiles for use in emulsification, and formulations for delivery of active species. Here we propose a reflectivity study to investigate adsorbed monolayers of our amino acid-based soluble surfactants from binary mixtures with model anionic and nonionic commercial surfactants. We aim to determine the extent of adsorption at water-air interfaces from pure and mixed surfactant solutions of these species, in competition with surfactants commonly used in formulations.
