Neutron Measurements on ROTAX with a double coincidence Proton Recoil Telescope

Abstract: A Telescope Proton Recoil (TPR) neutron spectrometer has been designed and first tested at ChipIR in December 2016 to measure the E > 10 MeV neutron spectrum for chip irradiation experiments and to validate Monte Carlo calculations. Although the first test showed the scientific value of the TPR technique, it suffered from excessive gamma-ray background due to too high counting rates. Based on these results, we have revised the instrument design by use of a double coincidence silicon setup to further optimize the signal-to-background ratio. In this run, we aim at demonstrating the benefits of the new design and at providing improved measurements of the neutron spectrum at ChipIR.
