Optimization of the composition and firing temperature of B4C ceramics to be used as shielding material at ESS

Abstract: We propose a characterization study for checking the final optimization of the composition and firing temperature of a functionalized ceramic enriched with B4C powder to be used as a shielding material in the construction of the ESS beam-line hutches. The same material could find useful application in other pulsed neutron scattering facilities like, for example, ISIS, SNS, and J-PARC. The measurement will consist in the intensity analysis, with respect to the spatial coordinates and energy, of the transmitted neutron signal through newly prepared types of ceramic containing boron. This project is supported by the CNR-ESS in kind activity.
