Muons for Energy Nanonics
Abstract: In order to improve the performance of future energy devices, nano-structured materials is one of the most promising routes. LiFePO4 is a commercial battery cathode material where nano-structuring is of specific interest due to its anisotropic crystal structure where the Li-ion diffusion occurs in 1D channels. In this experiment we propose to systematically study the microscopic Li-ion diffusion in nano-structured LiFePO4 samples. With our synthesis protocol we are able to produce high-quality nano-platelets with tunable size as well as selectable internal direction (!) of the 1D ion channels. This will allow us to obtain samples with well defined length of the ion channels as well as ratio with respect to the nano-platelet surface area. The results will be correlated with our parallel studies of the surface phonon spectrum in the same samples acquired by inelastic neutron scattering.
