fac-tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III)
Abstract: fac-tris[2-phenylpyridinato-C2,N]iridium(III) (tris-(2-phenylpyridine) iridium, [Ir(ppy)3]), is a heavy metal complex that is the most frequently used precursor molecule for the synthesis of electro-phosphorescent materials, which are used in organic light emitting diodes. The material is highly topical: a Web of Science search produces over 800 hits, all from within the last 10 years. In the present proposal, time is requested to record simultaneous INS and Raman spectra of 2-phenylpyridine and Ir(ppy)3. The data will be analysed with the aid of CASTEP calculations. The free ligand is straightforward to measure, however, this experiment is made challenging by the large absorption cross section of the iridium complex: 425 barn.
