Low temperature neutron diffraction of Sm2Ti2O7 pyrochlore compound

Abstract: Topological phases of matter became scientific highlights during the 70's and magnetic frustration is one of the mechanisms that is believed to drive systems to one of that many possible exotic phases. We propose here to carry out measurements on a promissing candidate, the poorly studied pyrochlore Sm2Ti2O7. Because of the Sm extremelly small single ion mangnetic moment, one may expect that magnetism is higly supressed in this pyrochlore. Surprisingly, a sharp and strong phase transition appearing in heat capacity at 350 mK may indicate that samarium titanate has more to show. Our proposal here is to perform polarised and unpolarised neutron diffraction to identify this unknown low temperature phase.
