Probing Low Dimensional Magnetism in Lanthanide Formate Magnetocalorics

Abstract: Low dimensional magnetism provides a crucial playground for the discovery and exploitation of unconventional behaviour. Coordination frameworks have a tendency to adopt highly anisotropic structures making them ideal platforms for such properties. Lanthanide formate frameworks have demonstrated significant potential as paramagnetic magnetocalorics for low temperature cooling applications and we have recently shown that tuning the 1D magnetic interactions in these compounds from antiferromagnetic in Gd(HCO2)3 to ferromagnetic in Tb(HCO2)3 improves performance at higher temperatures. This proposal aims to examine magnetic correlations in the paramagnetic phases of the six other Ln(CHO2)3 frameworks that are accessible to neutron scattering. This will enable us to explore how magnetic interactions change with electronic configuration and how this in turn affects magnetocaloric efficiency.
