Disorder-induced suppression of magnetic ordering in frustrated Co(1/3-d)NbS2

Abstract: Magnetic ordering in frustrated systems with large magnetic interactions remains a key question in condensed matter physics. Despite strong theoretical and experimental quest to suppress conventional ordering and to observe the emerging low-temperature novel phases, only a handful of new spin liquid candidates were discovered to date and their universal understanding is still missing. Recently, local disorder was identified as a new tuning parameter to preserve the magnetically fluctuating state. We propose muon spin rotation experiments in Co(1/3-d)NbS2, a novel intercalated transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMD) system possessing a triangular lattice. Whereas Co1/3NbS2 was originally found to order antiferromagnetically at 26 K, our novel synthesis method of intentionally introduced disorder leads to suppression of magnetic ordering and enhanced spin fluctuations.
