Interplay between spin, charge and orbital degrees of freedom in a new family of manganite perovskites RMn3O6

Abstract: The aim of this proposal is to perform the first neutron diffraction study of the magnetic structures of recently discovered A-site columnar-ordered manganite perovskites RMn3O6. These perovskites extend the rare-earth manganites beyond the 1:1 RMnO3 and 1:7 RMn7O12 families, and exhibit unusual layer-type charge and orbital-ordered patterns. The presence of multiple magnetic phase transitions in some members of the series reflects complex interactions between the magnetic and electronic subsystems, and correspondingly a rich phenomenology is expected. Hence, these manganites provide a new avenue to explore the interplay between charge, spin, and orbital degrees of freedom.
