Examining the topological nature of superconductivity in PdTe2

Abstract: PdTe2 was found to be superconducting below Tc = 1.7 K and a Type-II Dirac semimetal. A protected bulk Dirac point arises from a band inversion that occurs within the Te p-orbital manifold, and is induced by a naturally disparate out-of-plane dispersion of pz and px/y-derived bands along kz direction. Spin-ARPES measurements reveal that the surface states are strongly spin polarized (>70%). STM and heat capacity studies give no indication of nodes in the superconducting order parameter or of in-gap states. The helical spin polarization of the surface states and the apparent s-wave superconductivity suggested from thermodynamic measurements present a dichotomy and raises a promising prospect to whether superconductivity has also a topological nature. With the aid of muSR, we will look for the proposed exotic superconductivity and possible time-reversal symmetry breaking in the sample.
