Atomic and magnetic structure of multiferroic hybrid perovskites

Abstract: The novel electric, magnetic and multiferroic properties of the metal formate perovskites have resulted in substantial scientific attention over the past fifteen years. Their bulk ground-state magnetic properties have been reported, but their magnetic excitations are less well understood; yet understanding these will be vital to modelling and tuning these materials’ useful magnetic behaviour. We are currently attempting to measure the magnetic excitation spectrum of these materials by powder inelastic neutron scattering. Reconstructing the three-dimensional spectrum from powder data, however, will rely on an accurate crystal structure. We therefore propose here a powder diffraction study on the same samples, enabling us to refine the crystal structure and hence to interpret our INS results. These data will also enable us to solve these materials’ magnetic structure for the first time.
