Excitation spectrum of the frustrated spinel GeCo2O4

Abstract: The spinel GeCo2O4 is a promising compound to establish the consequences of geometrical frustration, as the magnetic Co2+ ions are on a network of corner-sharing tetrahedra (pyrochlore lattice). In addition, GeCo2O4 has been proposed as a potential spin and orbital ice. Understanding magnetic neutron diffuse scattering is often crucial to model competing interactions in frustrated magnets and to discover novel states of matter. The magnetic excitation spectrum of GeCo2O4 has been discussed as molecular excitations arising from a molecular ground sate, with spatial confinement induced by the possible co-existence of spin and orbital frustration. The aim of this proposed LET experiment is to obtain the low energy-transfer excitation spectrum of GeCo2O4 to assess the impact of the data treatment on obtained magnetic diffuse scattering and hence on the "spin molecule" interpretation.
