Textured magnetic phases at a ferromagnetic quantum phase transition

Abstract: Quantum critically is a unifying theme across correlated electron physics. Classical or thermal phase transitions occur at nonzero temperature and are driven by thermal fluctuations, quantum phase transitions occur at T=0 as a function of a non-thermal control parameter (e.g. pressure, composition, magnetic field). They are driven by quantum fluctuations. At a mean-field level the description of quantum and classical phase transitions is similar. However, when order parameter fluctuations are taken into account, they are different. The quantum fluctuations allow the system to explore additional configuration phase space and stabilize new phases or change the nature of the transition. Here we will search for a new spiral magnetic phase which is created by suppressing the ferromagnetic behavior of a metal with hydrostatic pressure at very low temperature.
